At Shrewsbury Food Hub we strive to reduce food waste one bite at a time! This includes seasonal gleaning.
Historically, gleaning meant gathering leftover grain after a harvest. For the hub it means gathering surplus fruit and vegetables from gardens, allotments and orchards. We then share this surplus produce with our community network in quantities they can deal with.
Last year’s harvesting season saw us rescue over ONE TONNE of fruits including apples, pears, plums and damsons which otherwise would have gone to waste.
As the summer draws to an end, we are again calling for your donations of surplus produce to be dropped off at our depot. It can be any fruit or vegetables in fresh condition ready for distribution.
We can also offer help with picking/harvesting if we have teams available in your area. Our merry band of pickers are made up of existing volunteers, but we are always keen to hear from NEW people who would like to join us. Gleaning is active, social and gets you outdoors, so give it a try! Join us for the season or just one session – whatever works for you!
If one or more of the following statements applies to you, please email our gleaning coordinator via [email protected] and we will be in touch!
- I have surplus produce to share
- I am interested in joining the gleaning team
- I need some help with harvesting or picking
