We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing volunteers! Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, gain new skills, and have fun!
Our volunteer opportunities are varied with times to suit your own commitments (we are a 7-day-a-week operation). Whether you have a few hours spare on weekdays or weekends, there will be an opportunity that is right for you.
Help with the unloading/loading of deliveries (if you are able) at our Shrewsbury based depot. Sort food and make up food trays for redistribution to partner groups, check and label food, and and general depot tasks. Training is provided and help is always on hand.
Collect surplus food from local suppliers and deliver it to community partner groups and Foodshares. You will need a driving licence and your own vehicle and some heavy lifting is involved. We’re also keen to hear from drivers who are happy to drive our chiller van, Ronnie. Training provided.
We are always on the lookout for people who would like to support our office and fundraising team. If you are interested in using your skills for environmental and social good, or if you would like to learn new skills, we would love to hear from you.

Is Shrewsbury Food Hub a food bank?
Shrewsbury Food Hub is not a food bank. Everyone is welcome to come to our Foodshares. We are an environmental charity that collects good surplus food from local suppliers to save it from going to waste. The food is redistributed to local groups who can put it to good use and to community Foodshares where everyone is welcome to collect a few bags of food. What we do benefits planet and people. If you are in financial crisis and need food parcels, household items or free debt and money advice, support and information is available at Shropshire Larder.
How do I find my nearest Foodshare table?
There are 15 community Foodshare tables in Shrewsbury. Everyone is welcome to our Foodshares. They are run on a ‘pay-as-you-feel’ basis. Come along to help your purse and the planet! Food rescued varies depending on what is available – it could be bread, fruit + veg, eggs, store cupboard or chilled food like yogurt or pies. We never know what will be available on the day! Click the link to find your nearest Foodshare. Arrive early, as food goes fast! If you are in financial crisis and need food parcels, household items or free debt and money advice, support and information is available at Shropshire Larder.
How is Shrewsbury Food Hub funded?
Funding comes from donations from individual supporters and local businesses, community fundraising activities, and grants from charitable trusts and foundations. It costs around £256,000 to keep our wheels turning, and we are so grateful for the support we receive. Without it, we simply couldn’t do what we do.
Who do you work with?
We work with a range of local food suppliers including supermarkets, shops, farms and manufacturers – helping them to find a solution to their surplus food. We also work with a host of local charities and community groups who support our community – the food we supply saves around 40% of their food budget. In addition, we provide food directly to our community through Foodshare tables – helping reduce food waste and stretch people’s budgets - everyone is welcome!
What if I need more food?
If you are in financial crisis and need food parcels, household items or free debt and money advice for yourself or your family, support and information is available.
How many people does Shrewsbury Food Hub help?
Based on feedback from our community partners and Foodshares, we estimate that our food reaches at least 3,300 people a week.
