The Christmas and New Year period is the busiest time for Food Hub, and we wanted to share some eye-popping food stats that highlight the importance of our work, as well as the effort that goes into our operations, and the significant impact we have on both our community and the environment.
None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers. During this period, an astounding 286 community members stepped up to help. While some of our team volunteer year-round, many others generously gave their time during this busy season. On average, we had 20 volunteers each day. This generosity is the backbone of our operations, and we cannot thank you enough!
Here are the stats:
- A total of 1,787 trays of food, averaging 128 per day.
- On our morning food runs, we rescued 12.6 tonnes of surplus food, averaging 0.9 tonnes daily. Additionally, our ad hoc collections from restaurants, small outlets, and producers reached a record 4.9 tonnes this season.
- This all added up to an amazing 17.5 tonnes of food rescued over the period from December 21, 2024, to January 6, 2025. It’s difficult to wrap your head around this, but it’s a true fact!
Everyone can imagine the positive impact on our community with all that good surplus food being distributed via our established community group network and #foodshare tables. As an environmental charity, the difference we make for the future is part of our mission.
37.3 tonnes CO2 equivalent. In real numbers, this is the same as:
- Driving 186,000 miles in a standard petrol car (7.5 times around the world)
- Planting 1,600 trees
- The CO2 emissions produced by the average annual electricity consumption of 26 households
What a start to 2025!
