Here’s our quick guide for what should and should not be stored in the fridge:

Apples
Yes – If you want them to stay fresh long term but fine in a fruit bowl

Asparagus
Yes

Avocadoes
No – Ripen out of the fridge – then store to keep them slow ripening

Bananas
No – Bananas ripen other things so keep separate if you don’t want that to happen

Beans
Yes

Bread
No – Store sealed in a breadbin

Brocoli
Yes

Butter and milk
Yes – All dairy in the fridge on a cold shelf

Cabbage
Yes

Cheese
Yes – Cold shelf

Carrots
Yes

Cauliflower
Yes

Celery
Yes

Eggs uncooked or cooked
Yes – Although eggs are fine on the counter in a cool kitchen, they will stay fresher longer in the fridge

Garlic
No

Leeks
Yes

Lemons
Yes – But fine in a fruit bowl too

Meat
Yes – Coldest part of your fridge

Mushrooms
Yes

Oranges
Yes ? – But fine in a fruit bowl too

Onions
No – Dark space – not with potatoes because that will make onions sprout

Pickles
Yes – once opened Fine in the fridge door

Potatoes
NO – Dark dry space not in plastic

Pumpkins and squash
NO – if whole yes is cut

Salad leaves
Yes – Pop some kitchen roll in your salad drawer or in a bag of salad to keep it fresher longer

Soft fruit – blackberries, blueberries, strawberries,raspberries etc
Yes – Don’t wash it until you are ready to eat it

Spinach

Sprouts

Sweet potato
NO – Dry dark place not in plastic
